Why Dance at all?

Dance is many things to many people.  We dance from our youth to our old age.  We dance because it makes us happy, because we love, because we want to share our thoughts, and because we live.  Lofty minds and unfettered creativity have described and explained, and shown us what dance is.  For myself, this quote by author James Howe says it all:  “Life is short and there will always be dirty dishes, so let’s dance.”

That’s why when recently ABC anchor Lara Spencer laughed while reporting on Prince George’s school schedule (which included ballet) on GMA,  I was fuming.  I took to my personal social media channels like thousands of other dancers, and parents of dancers who recognize the endless value of the pursuit of dance at any and all levels.

A few days later, Ms Spencer was forced to apologize as over 300 male dancers took to the streets for their ballet class just in front of the Good Morning America Studios

About National Dance Day

National Dance Day was launched in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, the co-creator of So You Think You Can Dance and co-founder of American Dance Movement (formerly Dizzy Feet), in partnership with American congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who introduced a National Dance Day resolution to express support for dance as a form of valuable exercise and of artistic expression.

As of 2019, National Dance Day is celebrated in the United States annually on the third Saturday in September.

Local organizations will be hosting special events featuring dance and movement activities — check your town’s events calendar.
