Marsha and Marisa's journey
Our founder and owner/designer, Marisa Cerveris, knew at an early age that she wanted to follow in her mother Marsha's footsteps, and study dance. Marsha had been a modern dance student, studying the Martha Graham technique at the Julliard School before beginning a family. So she understood when Marisa needed to follow her dream to dance. After advanced study at North Carolina School of the Arts and later the School of American Ballet, Marisa became the last dancer to be chosen by George Balanchine himself to join the New York City Ballet Company.
During her career, Marisa danced and guested with companies throughout the USA, Europe, and Asia, including Compania Nacional de Danza (Madrid) under the direction of Nacho Duato; Natalia Makarova Company (NY); Ballet Arizona under the direction of John Clifford, and Ballet Du Capitole de Toulouse with Nanette Glushack and Michel Rahn. Upon returning to the US, Marisa toured the US in Nicholas Hytner's Tony award- winning production of "Carousel," and later joined the cast of "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. Now, Marisa is enjoying giving back to the community that has given her so much. SteelCore Barre is a new boutique studio in Bethlehem, PA, where Marisa coaches young pre-professional dancers in ballet, pilates and injury prevention, as well as active impassioned women eager to explore the capabilities of their own bodies.
As a dancer, Marisa knew what she wanted in comfortable clothing for all-day wear in rehearsals and classes. Marsha had also instilled the love of fabric, color, and design in her daughter, teaching her to sew. Together they created costumes and projects until the difficult moment when Marisa left home to continue her dance training. While pursuing a career, she began designing and sewing dancewear for herself. Soon, friends also wanted garments, and Marisa learned to design for other people's body types. And so began ByMarisa Dancewear, a line she continued to refine and develop in addition to her gruelling touring and performance schedule.
The dance wear has been featured on TV's "Dancing With The Stars" and "Breaking Point;" the movie "The Company," starring Neve Campbell, and is worn by professionals worldwide.
After leaving the world of performance, Marisa's movement vocabulary expanded to include pilates and yoga and her design interests expanded as well. New collections SteelCore® and later eco-friendly SteelCore Planet were developed for active women like herself: separates and more practical athleisure apparel that could take busy women from class, to car, to cocktails.Resillience and rediscovery are key ... our tagline reflects who we are ...
